Thanks for Okada family, it was really really truly amazing 2 months ever in my life. I am so happy that we can stay with our new family member very closely. Definitely this two months will be our turning point. We are so tired for the return today, so I'll post some remaining tomorrow.
Thank you Mitsu chan, Tae chan, Marie chan, Zen kun and Hanako grandma!!
It used to be a dining space where all the guests gathered and enjoy the big plates. Now it is a relaxing lounge space, and dining space moves to the middle section. It turned out working really well, people can wait before dinner is ready, and after having dinner, moves to this place and enjoy coffee and dessert.
モノが沢山あったのが減って、白い壁の効果もあって、とてもすっきりしました。 There used to be lots of things, and now thanks for the power of white wall, very trimmed.
中央のテーブルをつけたり、離したりして、ゲストの数に応じて配置換えもできます。 By gathering tables in the center, or part it, we can treat large group guests or small group guests flexibly.
My new hobby, pealing wall paper also contribute some on this renovation. The posts in the middle were plastic brown, fake-wood wall paper, and covered with reed screens. Now it's all gone! Mitsu chan and Tae chan will think about what color they want to paint, or maybe putting on plaster.
It used to be just a corridor, where we just pass. Now it becomes kind of gallery space, where we can put even brochure, and hope people can stop and see this space. With new open window and plaster wall, this space became blighter and cleaner.
The most inner space used to be store-space. We again put away lots of stuffs from here and peal walls and re-painted into white. We projected my slides on to this wall and the space is now a nice event space.
Since we don't have any budget, we just did by ourselves with minimum tools and available materials. Great great thanks for Rica san's suggestion, how to re-use, re-design the space, all the member of Okada family and we worked hard and did it. We hope people who knows "Before" will surprised at seeing new KAIYU space. I also expect KAIYU will never stop changing, so we also look forward to seeing the new KAIYU in the future.
Every year, we go Shimanto river for swimming competition. We used to stay at NAKAMURA city close to the river one day before the competition, and every time we came back, we realized the number of closed/shuttered stores gradually increased.
We went to closed department store in NAKAMURA the other day, to shop. We entered the closed down building and, wondering around the products which were covered with dust and not on sale any more, and searched for "something" which we were interested in, and buy it 50% off from the old price seal. In side the building, too old stuffs were scattered everywhere, very retro, nostalgic, broken products. In the top of the building, one woman is still working. Not sure what is her job, but seems like there's another person she works for. Very strange building to me indeed.
I found something which I'm interested in. Old tin BENTO cans and two hot irons. The cans cost about ￥100-250 each. Will those be in use in my daily life? Well, I think it will and I'll try to, but there maybe some possibility that they sit on the shelf again at my home. I wish all the materials I own should be used in my life practically and live together with me. However I love to stock the stuff and just enjoy buying at the same time. It is difficult to have a good balance...
When we cleaned up KAIYU's dining space, we put away many furniture and stuffs into the back room, and I said to Mitsu chan that all those dirty, broken, unnecessary stuff should be thrown away. He responded to me that he is not a person who can dispose stuff easily. He wants to fix everything and make it alive again, that's why he cannot dispose things he have.
KAIYU has rooms and large space, so it's really easy to possess things. Both Mitsu chan and Tae chan like to prepare for "sometime in future" and hope to re-use, revive the stuff they own.
It's just a difference if you see things are already dead or still alive. The stance would be different depends on how much revival skill you have and how much space you have to keep those stuff. Mitsu chan and I have very different skills and space, thus our opinion may never intersect. I just,, want to dispose that broken electronic organ and the old curtain..
"Daddy horse ranch" where Emi san just open her business is the place where she accept racehorses who are retired. She said the retired racehorses would normally get killed in Japan. Once racehorse cannot be a racehorse, they are considered as dead. Living creatures are alive as long as their heart beats. How about material and stuff?? Dead one, alive one, and sleeping one. The diffs between dead and sleeping is a hair's-breadth.
We saw the last guest group off to Kochi a while ago, and our fruitful day has ended. It was really quick, but very substantial one (well, which is as always). We had two students from Kochi University who came here for intern last month, two NPO coordinators for that internship, Emi san who just open the very first facility in Tosa Shimizu where people could ride horses and join animal therapy, Mr. Oka who is famous for innovating the new method in agriculture, Kumika san and her colleague who is working for local educational board in this area. Although the numbers of the guest we has was small, and many were family and our friends, I was truly satisfied with the quality of the event today.
I originally planed to show an animation movie as the second part, but made a last minutes change to have an interview with a guy who was hit by this TSUNAMI in Fukushima, and fled to Kochi for safety with his family. I met him at OKI Marin (a guesthouse near KAIYU) when I went there with the even flier for advertisement. The owner Yoichi san told me that they have guests who came from Fukushima, and who used to work for TEPCO as a plant engineer 10 years ago.
Yoichi san asked me if I want to meet him, and I said yes, then we met Mr. Tono and had a quick conversation. I thought he is the one who should talk on 23rd, so requesting him if he can come and talk "the day after tomorrow".. I agree it was not well planned, but ended in very good result. We could listen to the very real story about the earthquake and the situation within the nuclear power plants in Fukushima, and also the meaning of "numbers" in the news. (i.e what does it mean to get 0.24μSv/h for an year to you.)
It was accidentally happened, but it amazingly went great. I am so so happy and truly appreciate all the support from Mitsu chan and Tae chan, who always encourage us to do what we want to do, and give us their great smiles.
To me, this event is one of the very last thing we will have during our stay at KAIYU. I am content with the outcome of this event but now it's end, and I feel so sad at the same time.
Three more days to go. Only three days.
The count down really started, and I think I could get some confident out of this event today. I was not sure what I did, achieved when I worked for the company in last 10 years. I've been in the same place and not sure what I really can do when I am "out" from the company. However, now I have some clue for the next step after this two months stay. I will not come back to the "same" place with obscure vision. I think it's not just my vision, but Tamaki family vision is getting clearer.
With a month stay, we couldn't get this vision, but with two months stay which was accidentally extended, we could get it. There was so many things we wanted to do for the first month, and we actually completed and did it in the second month. Although we have remaining, I think we'll visit this place sometime soon, and our two months experience will help us to move forward to the next actions.
Sincere thank you for everyone who came here today, and support us today. Thank you!
明日はついに、イベントの日です。 Finally, tomorrow is our first and last event at KAIYU.
私達がやる、最初で最後のKAIYUでの会になりますが、 1時間お話しをするため、スライドを作ったり、準備に追われ すっかりBlogが後回しになってしまいました。 I will have about an-hour presentation, so preparing the slides and scenario required lots of time, so I didn't update my blogs for a while...
そして、海癒とお別れし、私達の家に戻る日まで あとわずか。カウントダウンがはじまりました。 Also our final date at KAIYU is coming,,, we have to say good bye to this lovely life and go back to our "home" soon.
2ヶ月の滞在をしても、毎日の色々なことがとても楽しいし、 ホントに毎日、毎時間がとてもとても大切な時間になっています。 Even after 2 months, things here are still so fun, and everyday, every hours are so precious to us.
On 20th, new KAIYU homepage was released. Yu chan did a great job and we all love this new pages. We use lots of photos which Mitsu chan took, and also I took some pictures in order to express the essence of this place. After the release, we got two reservation and Mitsu chan said it was really smooth as the customers see and understand KAIYU's policy and provide necessary information. He said the operation cost to take the reservation reduced to half! Bravo!
19日は蛍を探しにいきました。まだ早いよ、などと言いながら 皆で車に乗り込んで観に行くと、いました！小さな光を放つ、蛍が４つ。 On 19th, we went out to see HOTARU (firefly). It's still too early to see HOTARU in Japan, but we drove down to the place and we found them! Four small firefly in the rice field, amazing.
18日は満月でした。これまた皆で、でてきたばかりの大きな月を 屋上に上って眺めました。今回は写真もとれた。まるで日の出のような明るさの月。 On 18th, it was full moon. We went up to the rooftop and see the big moon which was just came out from the horizon. This time my camera worked fine, and I could capture a beautiful moon photo. It looked like a sun rize.
明日は久しぶりのプレゼンテーション。 何人きてくれるか分からないけれど、聞いてくれる人に何かを残せるよう 頑張ろうと思います。 And tomorrow, I will have a presentation after a long time. Not sure how many people will come, but hope I can leave some message to the people who listen to me. Wish me luck!
Mitsu chan and Marie chan went to see to get some fishes. They did skin diving, a few meter deep in the ocean and, they checked each secret points where Mitsu chan knows as fish's home, stabbed fishes with harpoons.
海のめぐみたち。 Those are treasures hunted in the ocean.
エビを握るまりえちゃん。生き物と生きるのに、慣れている。かっこいい。 Marie with a big shrimp. She doesn't get afraid of touching living creatures. Cool.
かわはぎ？ これは、とれたその日にお刺身でカルパッチョになりました。 KAWAHAGI. File fish(?). This was become a "carpaccio".
手前が、かさご。アクアパッツアに。奥が、ぐれ。石釜でハーブと塩こしょうでグリルに。 Front one is KASAGO, a rock fish, and the behind one is GURE (sorry don't know it's English name), we've grilled with herbs, salt and pepper.
When the evening comes, each of us starts to prepare for dinner. Dinner time is always 7 'o clock, and one prepares for chopsticks, the other brings water, dishes, putting rice on the plates. We eat something with our fingers, and adults would enjoy checking today's drinks (glass of beer or wine) if it taste good or not. And we all wait for Tae chan's call - "Ok, let's eat!".
今日はシチュー。ストーブを丸く囲んでのお夕飯です。 Today's stew. We surrounded the stove and had dinner.
We forgot to eat oysters when they were hunted, thus we grilled them. They smelled like condensed sea. Very yummy..
Eating is definitely one of the best pleasure in our life. And here at KAIYU, we can see where our foods came from. We don't need to use our imagination to guess where their hometown is, but we can actually see their life and we kill them in order to eat them. The cycle of kill and eat is very short, and very clear.
Before going to the ocean, Mitsu chan asked me. I cannot really tell if I like it or not. I just, haven't had any experience to "kill" something for eating. I feel a bit scary when I cook fishes by myself, touching clammy body made me shudder sometimes.
Eating is killing. And when I live in my town, I never "see" the process of killing to eating, which is gently hidden from our daily life, stored in black box. Maybe it's better for me to see that process. I assume I will never be able to kill mammals for eating, but I think I should go hunting fishes with Mitsu chan while I'm staying here.
Finally Spring has come to Tosa shimizu, about,,, a week before? Flowers bloomed and winds are getting soft, and warm sunny sun light makes my body really relaxed. I love riding on a swing in front of the ONSEN facility with Sana, and singing out laud without worrying about if anyone listened to my song. And while my singing, Sana fallen asleep which is the most loveliest part.
"The ocean is still blue, and the sky is still blue it's a sincere white which may imply the end of the world "
The songs I sing is always the same. Always the same melody and with a faint memory of lyrics, but I know my voice can bring Sana a sense of security. I can feel she is feeling a peace, and so am I.
"What a wonderful story that in the middle of this large world I am the one who you trusted the most."
I feel no challenge to get into ocean, because it's already warm enough. With the sunny sunlight, blue transparent ocean, and the beautiful waves, my body easily get excited and I can just jump into ocean with excitement. As for surfing, to be honest I was surprised at how bad my skills are now, however it's just okay, I can happily practice the balance on the board with soup wave, and the short float on the water just makes me super happy.
I cannot believe how different my life is right now. I can appreciate everything literally. I think I am now simply cherishing the most important thing in my life as my first priority. What a beautiful life we have right now. Thank you. Thank you.
Thanks for Mitsu chan & Tae chan's support, I will hold an event at KAIYU on April 23rd. I've been thinking that my opinion is not a minority, as I saw "everyone" have similar opinions and tweets here and there. However it seems majority of the people didn't think the same way I do, the result of the metropolitan governor election proves it and it also reveals that lots of people are indifferent to this election which was, to me, number one important election ever. The "everyone" I know wasn't real "everyone", unfortunately.
So, here, I want to know what people in Tosashimizu or Kouchi is thinking right now. I know folks who will (kindly) visit here to join the event will have similar opinions with me or KAIYU, but there might be another opinions. I want to know those opinions and share informations what I have, and what they have.Maybe there'll be someone who yet has specific opinions, and in that case, I hope this event will evoke their interest.
Mitsu chan advertises this event to students at Kouchi and friends around Tosashimizu city. (Thank you.)
No one can tell what will be happened exactly at this moment. In this vague situation, we cannot really judge what is "right" and "wrong" to everyone, if so, I think it's very important to think and talk, and to cultivate our opinions.
Hanako grandma always talked to Sana "Hey, you should talk to me now, hurry hurry." and "I know you want to stand up. I want to see you walking toward me." ... well, life is long I want Sana grow up with her pace. Easy, easy, baby!
We went to play soccer at Toujindaba the other day, Toujindaba is one of the popular sight seeing spot in Tosashimizu, located close to Ashizuri Misaki, where you can see huge huge stones (which was just amazing).
It was my first time to go there, actually first time to hear the name as well, many stone implement tools were found there which came from Jomon period and Yayoi period, and also those huge stones are making a small mountain, where many spiritual people visit in order to get some holy power.
It takes about 30 min by car from KAIYU to Toujindaba（唐人駄馬）. We left home morning and dropped by "Tairyou ya" （大漁屋）to buy our lunch BENTO. KAIYU family and also their relatives often come here, so their main purpose to visit there was to play soccer. Adult team VS Child team, they are both seriously targeting to win the game. Last year, they did the same "Serious cup", and after the very close fight, Child team lost, and everyone burst into tears, broke down on the ground and could not stand up for a while.
This year, what's going to happen? After one warming up game, the Serious cup kicked off.
Everyone dripping with sweat, and the game turned into a struggle for one point. Finally Adult team barely won. Perhaps, next year will be Child team's year.. but who knows? :)
After the game, we went up to huge stones and had lunch. Not sure if you can tell how high and dangerous these place are, but it was SO high!!! If you have a fear of heights, or too old to climb up steep place, you cannot go.. although it's a sight seeing place, but not everyone can go. The view was just amazing so I'd recommend to go there if you are come close to here.
Today is the last day of Spring holiday for Marie & Zen. Tomorrow a new semester will start.
Tomo chan who is a friend of Tae chan stayed KAIYU for three days the other day, and she brought two persons here, Ayaka san & Alan who they met at organic market.
They used to live in Chiba prefecture (east to Tokyo) and offers some lessons about how individuals can regaining their self-healing awareness through knowledge of holistic living, a living raw food lifestyle. Now they move to KUROSHIO CHOU in Kochi prefecture.
Tomo san met them at organic market, and she happened to hear their speech about "To know Fukushima Daiichi, and think about how we can live together with radioactive materials." and she was impressed by that story, so she talked them and ended in bringing them into KAIYU for providing us the same lecture.
This time, Fukushima Daiichi situation is different from Chernobyl, there's no explosion and no diffusion of radioactive materials into air. However Fukushima Daiichi plants continue to discharge toxic, radioactive contamination untreated. This means, those are undermining water, soil, microbes, food,, all the food chains for a long period. Given this sad but inevitable situations, Ayaka san & Alan proposed to learn more about the characteristic of radioactive materials and get to know how to "live with them". Ayaka san posted a series of blog posts about this in Japanese.
They both worked for BBC, and according to Yu chan, they took very "journalistic" approach, checking the data and the fact one by one and proceeding further. As for me, after talking and meeting them in person, I feel they are trustworthy.
We get too much info through internet, tweeters etc, and it is very important to gain the right media literacy, judging the accuracy of the info, confirming the news source, in order to protect ourselves and choose the "right" decision for individuals. Especially, when it comes to this nuclear plants situations and the data about radioactive materials, I have no way to interpret those by myself correctly, thus I have to trust someone's interpretation who I can trust.
To me, Ayaka san & Alan's story makes sense. It is not enough for someone who lives really close to nucplants, but may help people in east Japan who have to keep eating and drinking water and foods which are officially considered as low contaminated level "not affect to your health immediately".
They also speak about the necessity of increasing the planted amount in east Japan where we still have healthy soil. This year, we can predict (and already we see the situation) that east Japan cannot produce food, so we'll face the shortage of those. When it's really short, maybe China and/or America will approach Japan to import their food and materials which are currently regulated due to the safety concerns, i.e.genetically modified food products. We don't want to loose our ability to produce healthy food products by ourselves. Fortunately, it's spring time, now is the time farmers start planting, so it's worth for us, each individuals, requesting farmers, agricultural cooperative associations, and our government to increase the planting in west Japan.
Last but not least, I'm planning to help one event at Kaiyu, probably around 23, 24th weekend in April. The event will have three parts, the first one will be the lecture by Ayaka san & Alan, an the second one is having a light meal and pizza using our new stone oven, and the last part is watching a movie "When the wind blows". I'd like to make an opportunity to let people around here "To think, talk, and to continue thinking" about current situation, 59 nuclear plants in Japan.
Today, the stone oven is completed! Please see the progress and tonight's party in the slide show. The base stones were piled up by intern-students for two days, and after that Yu chan has been working hard to make wooden model and piled up bricks. And finally, today he has completed all those work and we decided put fire in it. We also enjoy the grilled dishes completely :D.
I made pizza dough, and banana pound cake, and Yuzo, not only done the stone oven, but he also cook a great pork grill with rosemary and garlic, and grilled vegetable on it's side which soaked with juicy pork juice.
At dusk with warm spring air, when the sky became light purple and pink, we enjoy drinking beers and children immediately grabbed pizza which took out from the oven. Because of the high heat, and the power of far infrared radiation, the pizza was so crispy and very delicious comparing to my pizza cooked with small oven in my house.
I also enjoy talking with the people who we gathered tonight. All the stories were very interesting to me, like "Whale has a way to communicate each other across this globe with only four of them.", and also a story who went to stricken area of north east Japan to help/support victims. We also talked what we can do at our end. There's another story I want to share in this blog, so I'll write it tomorrow (or sometime soon).
The idea of "creating stone oven" just hit me before I came to KAIYU, and I clicked to buy "Stone oven DIY" book on amazon next day, then after that, I requested Yu chan to make one, and he did the rest :D. I am the one who hit on ideas, and Yu chan is who implement. What a great partnership?!?! Now, another dream comes true and we are so happy. We have new entreatment / activities during none-summer time at KAIYU. Gathering around the fire and eating yummy food,, it's just so gorgeous and luxurious. If you want to review "what is the real rich life", KAIYU is the best place to do it.
Thanks for everyone, she is so healthy, growing up without any problems, and cherished by EVERYONE around her. I believe all those love she gets not only from us her parents, but also Okada family and people in KAIYU would make her special.
I believe if we live in KAMAKURA with three of us, I'm the one who sit near to her and interact with her all day long, and Yu chan would do the same when he come back home, and sometimes maybe Rica chan would play with Sana. Three or four people maximum?
Here in KAIYU, everyone comes to Sana trying to communicate with her. Not only adults, but also small boys and girls, come to Sana and if they want to hold her, I just let her go. I know some parents do not want their baby be touched or hold by other people, but to me, I think it's good for both side, for baby and also adults/children. The power of baby is super. If there's a baby, all the atmosphere change and people in that space would feel happiness and calm, and I know if people interact with baby, they will be so happy. It's not just because my back gets stiff and I'm tired of keeping holding her by myself thus I let her go :).
I remember when she came to our life at Japanese style baby-birth hospital, I felt she was still part of my body which just separated, and I cannot let her go, away from me anyhow, but just kept her close, putting her on my breast until the next morning. She was so tiny, weak, a baby animal at that time. I kept feeling that she was my part of body until I come back to my home after a week stay at hospital.
When I come back home, I gradually felt Sana is not me, she is definitely my baby, but not "mine". To me, that was a big change. And now, after 5 months, she is one of our family team member who also tries very hard to glow up and works with amateur daddy & mammy. We now establish trust on each other. She is just a baby, but who can change the atmosphere in the room and make people smile and happy.
I know the expression "be blessed with a child", and I think baby is something which parents "keep" for a while. I don't know how to express this in English, but a baby is not owned by parents, but a baby is happen to come to your house and we are allowed to enjoy her happy power, and that we should help her/him to be able to stand up and walk by one self.
Thanks for Sana chan, things start moving for both Yu chan and me. Thank you for coming to us, let's keep going this fun life together!
